The United Kingdom branch of Christ Embassy Church has been indicted by the United Kingdom Charity Commission. Christ Embassy Church is one of the largest Churches in Nigeria and was founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome
The Charity Commission initiated its investigation into the church’s finances 5 years ago following random reports of irregularities. The commission has finally released a conclusive report of its investigation which has been published on its website.
The report is summarized below:
1. Christ Embassy Church did not comply with its grant making policy in paying grants to its television ministry, healing school, international school ministry and churches in France and Canada, as there were no receipt documents to that effect.
2. The commission also noted that the church’s board of trustees failed to comply with certain requirements in the use of Loveworld Limited.
3. The commission revealed the church lacked adequate understanding of financial management. This was evident in its lack of uniformity in its distribution funds to its charities.
4. The inquiry revealed that the church awarded a contract to a member of its board of trustees in 2013 which is a conflict of interest.
5. The church failed to disclose its assets as UK law demands. It was discovered that three of its UK properties weren’t disclosed.
6. It was also discovered that the church failed submit its tax returns on time from 2010 to 2013. This incurred a penalty fee.
7. Finally, it was revealed that the church failed to secure adequate insurance for its assets and liabilities. This poses grave danger and puts the church at risk.
